C.S. Lewis and the House System

Written by William Lee | Oct 25, 2018 12:22:05 AM

As the author C.S. Lewis once said, “We do not write in order to be understood; we write in order to understand.” These words give inspiration to the students of BCS, especially the students of House Lewis, a group of upper school learners who diligently read and converse about the writings of British author C.S. Lewis.

House Lewis is part of Bloomfield Christian School’s new house system, a system that rooted from traditional schools in England. There are four houses implemented within BCS: House Chesterton, House Lewis, House Sayers, and House Tolkien. Each of the four houses compete with each other in sports events or competitions such as Speech Meet and the Knowledge Bowl, which have become a tradition at the school. Students from the secondary school all are a part of the new house system and get to cultivate knowledge about classical authors such as: G.K. Chesterton, J.R.R. Tolkien, Dorothy Sayers, and C.S. Lewis. Each of these authors were renowned for their works of fiction and non-fiction alike, and were also strong believers in the Christian faith. Several of the author's novels, plays, or short stories express their experiences with Christianity. For example, C.S. Lewis’ The Screwtape Letters is a series of letters written by a senior demon to his nephew Wormwood, a junior tempter. Screwtape is a mentor to his nephew, who holds the responsibility of securing the damnation of a British man known as “the Patient.” Lewis has written other books which have become classics with children worldwide. The Chronicles of Narnia is a great example of a book which blends Christianity and fantasy together to create a story that generations have loved for years.

As a student of Bloomfield Christian School and a member of House Lewis, I have been influenced by the works of C.S. Lewis-  not only by his stories, but also by his strong belief in God. It gives me confidence to know that Lewis was a bold Christian who shared his faith with others through his writings so that he may be understood. As to House Lewis, I am honored to be a part of a community of students who all share a love of the writings of Lewis and grow in the faith to be diligent Christians and share the love of Christ with others. At BCS, the house system is one of the ways we are shaped to be bold ambassadors of Christ, so that we may go and live out his teachings.
