All of us have habits-- good or bad--that determine the course of our days. Whether we like it or not, our habits dictate our futures. January is a perfect time to stock of our lives and make adjustments. Organization is a key part of fostering healthy habits for everyone in the household!
Utilize stickers or symbols to engage the younger kids, and encourage older kids to add their own obligations and events, as a way of fostering personal accountability. Also, before you allow each month to fill up with external events, plan time together as a family!
Each week has a rhythm, and even chaos can become routine. Carve out specific routines for specific days, like “Friday pizza nights” or “Saturdays are chore days”! These routines provide a sense of normalcy and accomplishment amid the seasonal changes in activities.
Then, store these basics in the fridge, and mix and match with different sauces or topping to make a variety of delicious meals throughout the week!
Whether that means moving the TV to the basement, or limiting phone usage after dinner, practicing restraint will make the moments with them more enjoyable.
Above all, make time for reflection, quiet, the reading of scripture, and praying together with family and friends. Instead of dreading the requirements of each week, these habits will teach us to “number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom” (Psalm 90:12).
